Subsequent versions of Entourage added some of the missing functionality. (Subsequent versions have dropped the requirement for IMAP and rely solely on WebDAV.) Users complained of the lack of a variety of functions present in Outlook for Windows and Outlook 2001.

As a client for Microsoft Exchange Įntourage had included support for Microsoft Exchange servers since August 4, 2003, when the Exchange Update for Entourage X was released. Nevertheless, Microsoft has positioned Entourage as a "similar" product for Macintosh customers on Exchange servers. Entourage had its origins in Outlook Express 5 on the Mac, as well as Claris Emailer and contained "no ported code, and no Office code". Microsoft claimed that Entourage was intended "to address an entirely different audience". Unlike the other applications in the Mac version of the Microsoft Office suite, Entourage did not share a name with its Microsoft Windows counterpart. The Mail & Calendar apps on Windows 10 are in maintenance mode between now and when the Monarch client is ready to replace them. Of course, that won't provide you with all the integrations Microsoft has planned for the Monarch client, but it does give a general idea of the kind of experiences you can expect to have when using it.

Those curious about how this experience will look and feel can install the Outlook Web app via your web browser today. Microsoft also wants to replace the legacy Win32 Outlook client, but that is a goal which appears to be much further out and will be a gradual process as the legacy client is a mammoth that is not easily replaced. Microsoft will begin to preview its new Monarch client towards the end of this year, with plans to replace the Mail & Calendar apps on Windows 10 sometime in 2022.
